Neighbourhood & Getting around
The neighbourhood:
Where to eat:
Batu Bolong is crammed with great places to eat, and we’ve picked out some of the best choices, right within a short walk of your villa.
- Penny Lane: If you want to brunch in a beautiful setting, Penny Lane is the place to try. With an airy feel thanks to the glass roof dripping with vines and a whole funky style of its own, incorporating murals, stained glass, fountains and chandeliers, the ambience will have you and your Insta followers – hooked. It’s open for all day dining, but we recommend brunch – go for the shakshuka or the Dragon Bowl Z. The menu combines traditional Balinese dishes and Western favourites, and has something for everyone to eat while they soak up the atmosphere.
- Santanera: Organic, farm to table produce woven into a diverse range of Latin American fusion style small plates for sharing – we love it! Plus a roof top terrace with ocean views (sit here with a cocktail and some appetisers before the main event), and we’re all suckers for that. Then downstairs to graze on some ceviche – we love the hamachi with plantain crackers, leche de tigre and gooseberries – then grab some larger plates – the mole rosa that accompanies the dry aged duck (also with charred beetroot and pomegranate) is sensational, and you also have to try the Colombian corn cake – we promise it’s not the boring corn cake you’re expecting. Santanera also has one of the best wine lists in Canggu, so don’t miss out on that. Cheers!
- Luigis Hot Pizza: With metre long pizzas, this laidback, unpretentious joint brings you good food and crazy party nights. This is where the fun happens. Monday nights are club nights so bring your friends and prepare to dance!
- Warung Bu Mi: One of the best warungs in Canggu – delicious home style food, with presentation at a higher level than you might expect for a buffet. It’s a favourite among tourists and locals alike – always a sign of good food at a fair price. It’s centrally located, and busy, with the food constantly refreshed. This is a great option for non meat eaters too – the tofu and tempeh dishes are excellent, as are the corn fritters and the pumpkin curry.
- I Am Vegan Babe: Delightful, indulgent vegan food shines out at this game changer of a café! Although of course you can have a salad and a smoothie if you wish. Ricefield views, great service and cruelty-free food that feels decadent makes it a must-visit. Have one of their huge, juicy burgers (Buffalo Chik Wing Burger gets my vote), a full English breakfast, a club sandwich or a Teriyaki Tokyo bowl – you’ll never feel like you’re missing out.
- Avocado Factory: Can’t get enough avocado? Well, here’s a café that has sneaked into the darkest corners of your brain and created a temple to your most secret fantasies. No, not those ones: it’s ALL about the avocado. Everything on the menu here features local avocados somehow, some way. Get your mouth around their Truffle Benedict with avocado and truffled hollandaise, or the soft egg bowl with mascarpone, sourdough, avocado and chives. My personal choice? The rye sourdough, with avocado (of course!), mushrooms, almonds, chilli dust and lime pulp. And all with an idyllic view over rice fields.
- Lulu Bistrot: An exciting new addition to the local restaurant scene: a little piece of Paris in Canggu. Inspired by grand Parisian cafes, Lulu Bistrot’s menu is centred on French cuisine, with local ingredients. A fabulously stocked wine cellar and the strains of live jazz set the ambience. Arrive early so you can take an aperitif on the sunny terrace (try the house French Martini) before sitting down in the elegant dining room. Start with wagyu tartare or the onion tarte tatin, followed by the roasted crevettes with tomato, vermouth and tarragon, or the lamb neck braised in red wine gravy.
- Milk & Madu: Brunch, lunch, dinner: Milk n Madu smashes them all. With two Canggu branches (one in Berawa as well as the one in Batu Bolong), you’re never too far away to sample their great food, convivial atmosphere, or good coffee. Plenty for the kids too, with a delightful outdoor playground plus free face painting and a decent kids’ menu. The food is fresh and healthy, with the poke bowls one of my personal favourites. Don’t miss the lava stone pizza either, which is 2 for the price of one on Tuesdays and Sundays.
 Where to spa:
- Spring Spa: is a fun destination spa whether you’re after a quick beauty touch up or a full mind and rejuvenation package. Architecturally designed interiors, cold coconuts and an extensive treatment menu – not to mention the rumours of celebs – make this a great choice.
- Gold Dust: Canggu’s king of bling, Gold Dust is an excellent one stop shop for all the pampering you could wish for, from hair to nails to feet – plus full body treatments, of course. Don’t miss their piece de resistance, the 24K Gold Facial, an anti ageing skin rejuvenating treatment with real gold that’s the darling of Instagram.
What to do:
- Surfing: When it comes to surfing, you are definitely at the right place. Batu Bolong and Old Man’s Beach offer great breaks for beginners and long boarders. There’s also Berawa for intermediate surfers and the more advanced breaks of Canggu – Echo Beach, Sand Bar, Rivermouth and Pererenan. All breaks are semi-reef breaks apart from Sand Bar that is a beach break. No worries, there is no need for booties.
- Desa Kitsune: This lifestyle village marries chic Parisien style café culture with outdoor lounging, gourmet dining, designer shopping and lively parties. All the good things! First stop is Maison Kitsune for fabulous outfits straight from Paris. Then unwind with a Coconut Matcha Float at Café Kitsune in the Courtyard, and check out their homewares too – or perhaps take a dip in the pool. You might even want to come back here later: it’s also home to Ina Re, a fabulous new restaurant that blends Mediterranean and Latin flavours in a delicious series of sharing plates. And on Tuesdays and Fridays, the Garden comes alive with DJs and dancing.
- Love Anchor: Don’t miss a wander around Love Anchor, a bohemian market that sells a bit of everything, seven days a week.
Where to party:
- Old Man’s: Perfectly located right by Batu Bolong Beach, everyone knows it as the perfect place to chill with a sunset Bintang after a day’s surfing. But what you might not know is that it also powers on well into the night. Yes, open every day till 1am, Old Man’s is a great destination for late night parties and even live concerts. Check out Dirty Ol’ Wednesdays, and also keep an eye on which DJ is playing on a Saturday night.
- Black Sand Brewery: If your tastes in beer extend beyond the old Bintang, give this hip new brewery a spin for its great range of craft beers, brewed on site. It has an extensive beer garden to house its ever-growing crowd but however popular, it manages to retain a chill vibe. Fridays are the best night – get there early, grab a bite to eat, and stay until the early hours
Getting around:
We can provide a 14seater Hiace mini bus with driver for $85 USD = 1.200.000 IDR for 8 hours or $55 US = 800.000 IDR for 5 hours. Alternatively, the staff can help rent a motorbike. Prices range from $5.5 USD = 80.000 IDR for a standard Vario to $18 US = 250.000 IDR for the more premium Nmax.
